Marin Bikes
Still inspired by the unique beauty of the San Francisco Bay area and thrilled by the same trails we rode at the outset, we at Marin bikes are proud to be the only major bike brand continuing to design, engineer and test in the hills and on the roads of Marin County, California.
Marin bikes range of bikes has expanded greatly since those first steel mountain bikes left the production line. Innovators then as now, we continue to pioneer the use of state-of-the-art materials and cutting edge frame technology to anticipate the demands of an increasingly diverse cycling community.
Since its founding, Marin has built its strong reputation upon a number of technological advancements including:
• Lightweight Hardtail Mountain Bikes, utilizing state of the art titanium, carbon, aluminum and steel materials combined with cutting edge frame technology.
• Quad-Link Full Suspension Mountain Bikes, a proprietary technology providing the most effective and reactive suspension system available today. Recipient of multiple US and International Bike of the Year awards.
• Performance Oriented Flat Bar Road Bikes meld the comfortable style of a mountain bike with the light weight aerodynamics of a road bike.
• City and Urban Bikes, clearly leading the industry and setting the standards for performance and design.

Marin Bikes History
Family and employee owned since 1986, we strive to be a premier supplier of two-wheeled fun in the over 45 countries in which we operate, supporting cycling advocacy and social or environmental causes consistent with Marin bikes core values.
Since the late 1990s Marin has manufactured full suspension mountain bikes. Working with Jon Whyte, a British engineer who worked with Benetton Formula One racing cars in gearbox design, Marin developed a single-pivot rear suspension. Subsequent innovations including the TARA (Travel And Ride Adjustable) and quad link suspensions have lost the purity of the original concept but have maintained their popularity.
Marin's mountain bikes use steel frames for conventional hard-tail bikes. With the ascendancy of aluminium, titanium and carbon fibre, steel bikes are a niche market.
The Pine Mountain, manufactured by Columbus, is aimed at the cross-country racer. In the UK the Pine Mountain is available only as a frame. The Bear Valley frame is heavier but features seat stay bosses for a luggage rack and brake mounts.
Marin offer mountain bikes (full suspension & hardtail), road, street/urban, comfort and specific designs for women & children generally placed in the mid-high end bracket of each respective market.

The Whyte 146S comes with Easton kit and SRAM X0/X9 gearing for £2,999
There's a 146 Works version too – £3,999 with a SRAM XX drivetrain – or there's a slightly more down-to-earth 146S. Both offer the same carbon monocoque frame as the 146X. The S version will cost you £2,999 with a SRAM X0/X9 drivetrain mix, Easton finishing parts and wheels. Claimed weight is 11.8kg.
New for 2012 are two carbon-framed hardtail big-wheelers, at £1,999 and £2,599, plus the aluminium-framed 829, at £1,899 with a Shimano XT/SLX drivetrain mix. The most distinctive aspect of Whyte's 29ers is the short (but adjustable) chainstay length and fairly relaxed (70°) head angle. First impressions are that this makes for a ride feel that's remarkably stable at the same time as being very nimble on singletrack.

Whyte are offering a quiver of 29ers for 2012, and a full-suspension model is in the pipeline. This is the alloy 829
We couldn't help but notice a new 'entry-level' suspension platform in Marin's range. It's a new version of the long established East Peak, offering 120mm of travel and a Fox Float rear shock for a very reasonable £1,299. Rather than using Marin and Whyte's QUAD Link suspension setup, it uses a rocker link back end. We also took a ride on a prototype 100mm-travel full-suspension bike.
We'll have more news on the new bikes after Whyte's 2012 demo days in a couple of weeks. For more information visit www.marin.co.uk and www.whytebikes.com.

Marin's new East Peak is just £1,299 thanks to use of a rocker link suspension design that's cheaper to manufacture than their usual QUAD Link setup
