The 2018 Giant Trance – Review

The Giant Trance has been around for a few years now. In 2018 there will be four models in the range, with the Trance 4 being the entry level and the Trance 1 being the top of the range. The entire Trance range uses the same lightweight yet super strong and stiff ALUXX SL-grade aluminium frame with 140mm Maestro Suspension and Advanced Forged Composite rocker arm. It certainly is a trail bike that thrives in the most challenging conditions. This is due to the 140mm of smooth, active rear travel to conquer the roughest trails. The Trance 1 & 2 get the Fox Float Performance trunnion mount rear shock, while the 3 & 4 use the RockShox Super Deluxe RCT trunnion mount rear shock. The Frame geometry is designed around its 27.5 wheels, which deliver both quickness and control on rugged terrain. The Trance also comes with a 150mm suspension fork for even more confidence, making it perfect for technical terrain

When it comes to the drivetrain & braking components, Shimano take control of the Trance 4, 3 & 2. With the following
  • Trance 4 - Shimano Alivio/Deore 2x9-speed shifting & Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes
  • Trance 3 - Shimano Deore 1x10-speed shifting & Shimano M365 hydraulic disc brakes
  • Trance 2 - Shimano SLX 1x11-speed shifting & Shimano SLX hydraulic disc brakes
While at the top of the range, the Trance 1 benefits from the SRAM GX Eagle 1x12-speed drivetrain and the SRAM guide R Hydraulic disc brakes

The wheels are Giant’s own wheelset with the Trance 2, 3, & 4 getting the Giant’s XC-1 Wheelset, while the Trance 1 gets upgraded to the Giant TRX 1 boost wheelset. All the wheels and matched up with Maxxis High Roller II 27.5x2.4", tubeless ready folding tyres. The stem, handlebar, seatpost and saddle are all kept in house and supplied by Giant. With the Giant Trance you also have the added option of buying it as a frameset only, giving you free rein to build your own super trail machine.
