The first dilemma that confronts every prospective mountain bike buyer is whether to choose a model with a suspension system for both wheels or one which features suspension only on the front forks. Hardtail bikes - those which feature only front suspension - tend to cheaper and lighter than full suspension models.
On a hardtail, pedal power is transferred to the back wheel more efficiently, resulting in quicker acceleration and allowing you to sustain a higher speed with less effort. However, once the terrain becomes more technical and bumpy, the performance of a hardtail starts to suffer. This is particularly noticeable on downhill trails, where hardtail riders have to rely more on their legs to cushion the ride.
