The Story Behind Spatzwear

We now stock Spatzwear cycling apparel.

Spatzwear was born out of necessity — and a refusal to accept cold, wet feet as part of winter cycling. The idea began with professional cyclist and NFTO team manager Tom Barras, who in 2006 started sketching solutions to the problem he faced every winter. At the time, the right materials didn’t exist, so the project was paused until Tom retired from competitive cycling.

The turning point came during a freezing winter ride in 2016 in Ilkley, Yorkshire. Four hours in relentless rain and flooded roads tested even the toughest riders. While a well-known triathlete battled numb, soaked feet, Tom stayed warm and dry — thanks to overshoe prototypes he’d handmade at home and discreetly hidden under his tights.

Those prototypes proved to be a game changer. The triathlete immediately recognised their potential, and a partnership was formed in the Yorkshire Dales. Using a sewing machine, glue, and donated fabrics, Tom refined the design through ten generations of prototypes, each warmer, more aerodynamic, and more ergonomic than the last. The goal was simple: train longer, train harder, and outperform the competition — regardless of the weather.

Spatz overshoes don’t just protect your feet; they shield your lower legs from wind, rain, and road spray like nothing else on the market. The result is comfort, warmth, and consistency when conditions are at their worst.

In 2018, entrepreneur Ivan Eustace joined the team, bringing supply chain expertise that helped scale the brand globally. Together, they built an international network of distributors and retailers, and today Spatzwear ships to over 100 countries worldwide.
